Carnival Cruise Line urgently reminds its passengers to obtain the United Kingdom’s new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before cruising. The move comes amid news of passengers unable to board cruise ships due to missing permits. More importantly, the ETA is now a requirement for many travelers going to the UK, such as cruise passengers.

As UK ports are a growing part of cruise line stops, the ETA has raised concerns in the cruise industry. Consequently, Carnival’s advisory comes at an appropriate time as travelers book 2025 cruises.

What is the UK ETA?

The ETA is a digital entry requirement that the UK government introduced to strengthen border controls. Essentially, it applies to non-UK citizens and is mandatory for all travel types, including air, land, and cruise entry. Currently, a number of European and non-European travelers must obtain the ETA.

Unlike a visa, the ETA is quicker and easier to obtain, with a typical online processing time within 72 hours. Still, Carnival Cruise Line travelers must secure approval before entering the UK, even for short visits or cruise stops.

Carnival Message to Guests

Carnival’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, recently addressed the issue in a Facebook announcement. He warned that staff had to turn away passengers lacking a valid ETA, causing avoidable disruptions. Moreover, many directed their frustration at cruise staff despite the clear legal requirements.

To help prevent confusion, Heald emphasized early application.

“Remember, if you arrive at Heathrow or Gatwick Airport for your Carnival Miracle cruise and you do not have [the ETA, then] you may not be allowed into the UK,” Heald remarked.

As a result, Carnival hopes to avoid delays and denied entries during upcoming cruises.

Impact Across Cruise Industry

While Carnival has sounded the alarm, the rule affects all cruise lines calling at UK ports. This includes Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises, and other major operators. Moreover, passengers from countries like the U.S., Canada, and Australia are among those who must apply.

In addition, the ETA rule may affect travelers who transit through the UK even briefly. Therefore, Carnival encourages guests to review their itineraries carefully and check all entry requirements. Otherwise, they may miss cruises, lose money, and experience unnecessary stress.

How to Apply for the ETA

Applying for the ETA is a simple online process for Carnival passengers through the EVS platform. Applicants must provide a valid passport, a recent digital photo, and a credit or debit card. Once approved, the ETA is valid for two years.

However, travelers should apply at least a week before departure to avoid processing delays. The ETA links electronically to the passport used during the application process. So, any passport changes may require a new ETA application.

Reminder for Carnival Travelers

With the ETA policy now in place, Carnival is taking steps to keep its passengers informed. Travelers must take personal responsibility to meet entry requirements in advance. Above all, early action can ensure a hassle-free cruise vacation.

In conclusion, securing the ETA is essential for a smooth and stress-free journey to the UK in 2025.
